Day 2 - DC at night

We ended the day with a bus tour of the monuments at night. It was a great opportunity to see things in such a sharp contrast to how they are during the day. Most students agreed that the monuments were more majestic and impressive all lit up.

Marine Corp War Memorial modeled after the iconic Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photo by Joe Rosenthal in 1945.

Thomas Jefferson Memorial located on the tidal basin.

  2. The bus tour at night was one of my favorite parts of the whole trip. Every monument looked beautiful, and after seeing them in the daylight I definitely thought they looked better at night. The FDR memorial was one of my favorites, all of the fountains lit up really added a majestic feel to the memorial.

  3. The bus tour at night was a "must do" in my opinion. The differences between the monuments at night and during the day, was remarkable. I feel fortunate that we were given the opportunity to see them both ways.

    1. I totally agree! I thought the monument that showed the greatest difference was the Lincoln monument the scale just stuck out greatly at night in how the light hit the huge monument. Nick Parsells

  4. I feel that I missed out on seeing an amazing memorial because I decided to go visit the MLKJr memorial instead of the FDR memorial when we went on our night tour. Not to say that the MLKJr memorial wasn't beautiful and powerful in it's own way, I just heard many great things and satisfied stories from fellow students who went to see FDR's memorial instead. Next time that I visit DC, it is going to be on my list of things to do! (Right below the Crime/FBI museum, which sounds fascinating!) Definitely recommend the night bus tour for future trips!

  5. The night tour was such a great addition to the trip, it gave me a better feel for the city and where we were at when we were walking around and I loved the monuments at night. They have a totally different feel during the day and at night, especially the Lincoln Memorial. I was amazed at the differences, while I noticed more detail during the day of the architect and details, I really focused on Lincoln at night because of the way it was portrayed. The FDR memorial was probably my favorite of the entire trip, the depth of the memorial and the many different things portrayed really fit FDR's presidency perfectly. It just kept going-and continued to be a great memorial. It was very peaceful with the waterfalls, but also had great statues and design.

  6. My favorite monument we saw on the night tour was actually the Raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. The size of it was immense I also thought that the base of the statue, the rocks came from the island it self- Nick Parsells
